Karen Brooks Art


Karen Brooks was born in Dallas Texas where she hooked up with Stevie Ray Vaughn in High School. Through Stevie she met Jimmy Vaughn to begin her life long love for music. She had first hand meetings with Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Momma Thornton as well as other music greats.

She spent time in Austin Texas and met her future husband Gary P. Nunn. She became a part of the Austin Music Scene Singing and writing with Gary P., Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson and Hank Cochran. She later moved to Nashville Tennessee and became friends with Carlene Carter and was adopted into the Cash/Carter Family instantly after meeting John and June.

She wrote Emmy Lou Harris’ “Tennessee Rose” which was about John & June. It became a #1 hit and title track of Emmy’s "Tennessee Rose" album. Rosanne Cash then recorded one of Karen and Gary P.  Nunn's songs
“Couldn’t do Nothing Right”, which became Rosanne’s first #1 record.

Karen Brooks also wrote other charted singles for Patty Loveless, Tanya Tucker, Crystal Gayle, Russell Smith, Ann Murray among others. Three of her own albums were released on Warner Brothers Records.

She won a Grammy for writing the soundtrack song "I’m So Blue”
for Big Bird to the Sesame Street Movie "Follow that Bird.”
